The Dardenne brothers from Belgium bring to us “The Silence of Lorna movie”. The movie makes an attempt to study grim social subjects and then turns it in to a social reality by examining closely human behaviour in it’s various forms. The ending of the film is unusual and leaves you in a reflective mood. This film investigates the behaviour of a lost soul quite adequately. The recipient of mixed reactions, the film is still talked about after it’s screening at Cannes and that is what matters.

Lorna, (Arta Dobroshi) is an immigrant from Albania. She comes to a Belgium town, Liege to fulfil her dream of living independently and running a sandwich shop. She wants to do this with her boyfriend but has a distorted sense of morality. She enters a marriage of convenience to Claudy, a Belgium junky (Jeremie Renier) by paying him to acquire herself a Belgium passport. Claudy is struggling to quit drugs and is greedy for money. He knows that when Lorna is ready to divorse him, he will be paid again.

Claudy’s daily needs are on the rise taking their toll on Lorna who is desperate and lonely. Her dreams are the only thing that she has to look forward to at this point. A chance meeting with Fabio (Fabrizio Rongione), a Russian gangster, during this time changes things because he brainwashes Lorna to use Claudy till she gets her Belgium passport and then to do away with Claudy by making it look like a drug overdose case. He proposes that Lorna get married to him after that so that he too could get a Belgium passport. He assures Lorna that is she agrees she will be handsomely rewarded.

Lorna thinks that she will be able to divorce Claudy if she speeds up the proceedings of the divorce thus ensuring that nobody gets hurt except perhaps herself, marry the Russian gangster, earn her money and then buy her snack bar. Thus, sparing Claudy’s life as well. Claudy is aware of Lorna’s plan of waiting till she gets hers Belgium passport and then wanting to divorce him but he is unaware of her mob connections and agreement.

Lorna continues to play along from day to day with situations until a day when things make herv stop and think twice because of a certain series of events that unexpectedly take place. She stops to re-examine her path. The flame of humanity is lit in her. This drives her in to seeking comfort from a strange doctor and a nurse where she reveals to them how she inflicts wounds on herself to prove that her husband is physically abusing her so that the divorce is processed quickly.

Lorna’s actions may or may not lead her toward complete destruction. If it does or does not; no one knows. Her self-examination, her portrayal of hard inner exteriors and of a helpless woman on top, her silence, are all elements that add up to the excitement.
