Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have been well adapted into a movie by the same name by the competent director Tim Burton. The movie is targeted towards the kids and the young adults but is well watched by the adults too. Freddie Highmore stars as Charlie Bucket while Johnny Depp is Willy Wonka in the movie.

The film revolves around a young boy who is really going through a bad phase. He belongs to an impoverished family which includes his father, mother and four sick grand parents. The family lacks in money but not in love for each other. In the same town there was a chocolate factory owned by the bizarre minded Willy Wonka. One day Willy makes an announcement that he has hidden 5 golden tickets in the Wonka bars. The five children who get those tickets will tour the chocolate factory and one lucky winner will win a special prize.

Charlie was lucky. He found one of the golden tickets. So Charlie, the four other winners and Grandpa Joe began the tour of the chocolate factory. It was an unforgettable experience. There were many inventions of Willy on display. One of those was a chocolate river and they used a boat to travel on the river full of chocolate!

Charlie is well behaved throughout the adventure but each of the other four children display a pretty bad behavior. They get surprised by the many invention so Willy and start interacting with some of his inventions. This has dire consequences and all the children except Charlie are offloaded by Willy. Needless to say the surprise big prize is given to Charlie - the keys to the factory. But does he accept the keys? What happens next? What happens to Charlie’s family? The film is a big hit with the children. After a long time the children has some good movie to look forward to. We can safely say that despite the insipid performance by Johnny Depp the film manages to set the cash registers ringing. Depp should have given a much better performance but he looks totally disinterested for the better part of the movie.

Among the performances, the less said about Johnny Depp the better. Is he the same Johnny from the Pirates of the Caribbean series? His acting so pathetic that you may be tempted to think that he was not paid at all for this movie! Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket, however, proves a better actor than Depp, at least in this movie.

The film has some scenes which might be unsuitable for children but overall it will be good fun on a Sunday for the kids. The new version is much sleeker in production with better visual effects.
