The Home of Dark Butterflies is a movie adaption of a very famous English book by Leena Landers. The book was also written by the same name. The movie is in sync with the values of the Finnish film industry. It explores the life of a common boy through the eyes of the society. In recent times there have a plethora of similar movies from the Finnish movies stable that are making their presence felt at the world stage.
The story revolves around a fourteen year old Juhani (played by Niilo Syvaoja, brilliant in some scenes) who is supposed to have killed a baby sibling and has a dysfunctional family hence as a result he is bouncing from one shelter home to another. His troublesome behavior leads to his last possible refuge a correction home for kids known as the Island.
He is excellently played by Niilo Syvaoja, although the child’s prowess is still developing. Juhani has an unstable family environment hence he does not have permanent home or family and keeps moving to the different shelter homes. Due to his indifference attitude towards others he is sent to a very rigid correction home known as the Island under the tutelage of Olavi Harjula (Tommi Korpela).The Island is also the abode for half a dozen other kids who have led a similar troubled life as Juhani.
The culmination climax is the defiance by boys and their love-hate warden to the government who wishes to close the Island. Although it could be executed in a better way the film does makes a significant impression.The sound track of the movie takes an old school approach and is primarily based of the singing orchestra along with piano. The main theme is somber and is very effective in portraying the tension and drama as shown in the movie.
The music director of the movie Panu Altio brings a novelty in his score and as a result there is a significant freshness in the music. These awards are equivalent to Oscars in the Finnish film industry. The categories were best director to Karukoski, best editing to Ylnen and best supporting actor to Sveholm for playing Erik Johansson.In a nutshell The Home of Dark Butterflies is an excellent movie for people who feed on dramas. Although there are some undercooked plots and there is a feeling that it could be better executed but the acting and direction compensates all the glitches in the movie. Sometimes the pace of the story lags a little in the first half and that is the only minor flaw in the movie.
