Pineapple Express is part of this new wave of action movies where the focus is on putting a different kind of character into the middle of the action. The whole idea this time is that a couple of stoners are shooting it out with violent drug dealers, but the real appeal is that it feels like they came up with the whole story themselves. The violence in the film is portrayed in a funny way. It can be grisly and shocking, but in the end, it’s always played for laughs, and the movie doesn’t really stop to consider the fact that it’s not really easy on the soul to kill a dozen drug dealers, even if they shot first. But that’s kind of the whole point. The movie’s not a documentary, it’s a fantasy, a daydream, thought up by a pair of goofy stoners with a lot of time on their hands. As such, it hits all the notes you want it to hit and it’s one of the funniest movies of the last ten years.
