The verdicts are mixed for Season 5 of House, M.D., which is now out on DVD. Whether viewers enjoyed Season 5 or not, viewers of the program agree that it was unique. For instance, Cameron and Chase were not featured as heavily, and some audience members felt that the season was more melodramatic than earlier seasons.

Viewers that liked Season 5 report that the season connects with the viewers better than in previous episodes, and that the fan learns more about how House’s is impacted by his personal demons. The overall sentiment is that as long as Hugh Laurie is in the program it will continue to be a top rated, smart television series. Even medical professionals who watch the show say that in spite of its over-the-top presentation, the show is very engrossing and does give the viewers an idea of the processes a physician goes through when contemplating a challenging diagnosis.

Viewers who were a little under-whelmed by House M.D. Season 5 say that the writing is uneven: the season starts out strong, includes some less exciting episodes mid-season, then picks up steam during the last third of the season. Something that did not entertain many fans was what they saw as a blatant and clumsy way of hinting at a P.I. spinoff series by introducing a character that was not necessary to the season. Other complaints were that the character arcs were less interesting and that variable quality writing brought House’s trademark biting humor to cross the line into unwarranted shock value at times.

The 24 shows constituting Season 5 allow personal and professional boundaries to blur repeatedly among the major characters. Guest appearances in Season 5 include eljko Ivanek, Mos Def, and Carl Reiner. The DVD collection has extras covering new phases of Dr. Cuddy’s life, how the program is cast, and the level of realism in the stories. The DVD set also contains a 100th episode appreciation, and commentary for the episode about the patient with the “locked-in syndrome.”

Between those viewers who really liked Season 5 and those who were less satisfied, the vast majority report they still enjoy the show a lot and are happily awaiting House, M.D., Season 6.
