While the many channels on your tv are full of various tv shows, there are a few that capture your attention instantly hook you before you even notice. The Californication TV show definitely falls into this category. Providing viewers with a dose of comedy and drama, the show has earned itself an impressive rating of 8.7/10 on the reputed imdb website. Starring David Duchovny in the lead role, the series is loosely based on the life of well-known American writer and poet, Charles Bukowski.
Duchovny plays the role of Hank Moody, a writer who moves to California to overcome writer’s block. Moving along with Moody to the west coast are his steady girlfriend Karen (played by Natascha mcelhone) and their daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin). Moody, however, is not only combating a bad case of writer’s block but also his lack of resistance to such overwhelming desires as sex, alcohol and drugs.
He was trying to convince his girlfriend about his ability as a trustworthy and loyal spouse and a loving father. In the show the writer goes through various odd conditions in his daily life and he holds writer’s block responsible for all this. The show of 30 minutes is completely amusing and enjoyable. At the end the characters gains lot of sympathy for him for the jumbles he does in the series.
Moody’s agent and his wife are two more major characters in the series played by Evan Handler and Pamela Adlon respectively. Damian Young plays the part of Karen’s fianc Bill Lewis. Mia Lewis is Bill’s teenage daughter played by Madeline Zima. Apart from these main characters there are some tiny roles which take the story ahead. All together the show is enjoyable and worth watching.
Not surprisingly, the show has won three awards so far, not to mention numerous nominations. Among the three winners are two consecutive Emmy awards - for Outstanding Cinematography, in 2008 (Peter Levy) and 2009 (Michael Weaver). The third award - a Golden Globe in 2008 - was won by Duchovny himself for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series. Some of the nominations include three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for David Duchovny’s convincing portrayal of Hank Moody (including the one he won in 2008).
Californication is definitely one tv series that anyone would love watching a second time in its entirety. We’re realistic enough to agree though that the previous seasons will not be aired a second time on Showtime. However, there’s some good news for die-hard fans of this popular tv series.
