It is a known fact that good always wins against evil. We don’t need anybody to tell us that. Now do we? So when a movie comes telling us the same story then what do we do? Mostly we’ll skip it but that shouldn’t be the case for True legend. This movie is seriously entertaining. It tells us the fateful story of a king’s man who is made into a beggar by conspiracies and then he rises up again to crush the evil with all his force.

True Legend is an old Chinese tale of a very skilled warrior who rises from its ashes and is also known the Su Qi-Er. It plain English it means the King of Beggars Su. This story has already been retold many times since past but Yuen Woo Ping has approached this story differently as he focuses more on the action than on the actual life of Su Can. He shows the action narrative of Su Cans transformation to Su Qi-Er.

The movie narrates us the life of Su Can, whose name gets listed in the good books of the emperor because he saves the prince of the feudal lord. As a reward for his services he is awarded Lordship. But being a modest fellow he refuses the honor and makes his friend Yuan the Lord of his share of land instead. He in return gets married to Yuan’s sister Ying and they both start a martial arts academy under their master “The Grand Elder”.

In the meanwhile Yuan gets blinded by the power and decides to kill his beneficiary Su Can. He attacks his school and kills The Grand Elder. Meanwhile Su Can falls into the nearby river while defending his home. Ying sees that and jumps right after him. Satisfied with his work Yuan leaves the place for the search off ultimate power.

Both Su Can and Ying survive the jump and start living the life of beggars. While Su Can becomes an alcoholic and he loses all his power and will to fight, Ying becomes a maid and somehow they live their life. But a sudden meeting with an old comrade charges Su Can to the point that he realizes his goal and attacks Yang with all his energy. In the final battle he defeats him and restores the rightful owners of the land.

Acting in the movie is okay, since none of them are from a martial arts background and there is not much of a story to tell. The movie itself focuses on the action part of the story more than characterization of the actors. The only thing that is worth praising are CGI effects that director has used so liberally and frequently. These effects have definitely enhances the movie many folds and as a result the outcome definitely leaves the viewer spell bounded.

We all know the story hence if you are looking for a meaning full cinema then True Legend is not for you. But if are here for some kick ass action then this is one movie you wouldn’t like to miss.
