In celebration of the anniversary of the Great Land Run in 1889 there will be a 2009 Norman Day Parade and Festival. Oklahoma settlement started with the Great Land Run this was the opening of the unassigned lands. A group of community volunteers will be organizing this festival. Funds will be partially provided by the City of Norman and the other half will be funded by individuals or businesses.

For this year the festival will be held on April 17 and April 18, 2009. On April 17 there will be an 89er Wagon Train Association starting from 7:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. For April 18, 2009 at the Downtown area of Norman Oklahoma there will be 89er Day parade. Then after the parade at 12:00 noon the Blue Grass festival will start at the Moore Lindsay Historical Museum.

In 1870 a young surveyor named Abner Norman was commission to survey the Oklahoma Territory. The sign Normans Crew was burned on tree where they had their camp. Then when the fist Oklahoma settlers started arriving they saw the sign and decided to just keep the name. So from that time on their town has been called Norman.

For 31 years the 89′er Wagon Train Association has been having a wagon train every April and September. The Sooner, Teamsters & Trail Riders Association are the groups that composed the 89′er Wagon Train Association. The modes of travel when you join the train are on horseback, muleback, wagon or buggy. You will visit one camp to another passing by the beautiful countryside of Oklahoma. In order for you to have some excitement, fun and a taste of adventure for your vacation this Wagon Train will be the vacation that you are looking for.

For the parade on April 18 it will start 10:00 A.M. The theme of the parade is Stake your ClaimMake it Green. The route of the parade will starts at Norman High School, at Main and Pickard, and goes East down Main Street to Crawford Ave. there is no admission fee to attend this parade.
