When we first heard that Blink 182 members Tom, Mark, and Travis have collectively decided to take on an indefinite hiatus (read: break up) we can’t help but feel disappointed because we may be seeing the last of a great band. We all thought we’d never hear another good music from any of the three members until Tom announced his new band, Angels & Airwaves.

The former members of Blink 182 were known to be very talented so it seems like we will not be hearing good stuff from a new band, whether one of the three is fronting them. But that was not the case when Angels & Airwaves came out with their debut album We Don’t Need to Whisper.

We all see how great an artist Tom in this album. In each track, you will hear how powerful and infectious Tom’s vocals are. He gives life to every song in the record. Combine it with a good writing and melody, you have a great song in your hands.

The record is close to remarkable. It’d exceed your expectations about the band’s music. It did mine. The tracks are made up of good lyrics, catchy melodies, nice rifts, and great sound. All of these elements when combined together, plus the amazing vocals of Tom make up a great first album. This is something worth listening to.

With Angels & Airwaves, Tom has taken on a more serious path. He, together with his new band mates, was able to create a great line up of songs that talk about war, love, loss, hope, and space. Each track can stand alone. Each track is brilliant in its own way. They have a more mature sound. The lyrics attempt to talk about serious stuff with more depth.

Upon listening to the album, you can hear how well the band plays their instruments. To give due importance to their knack for playing the instruments, they have made quite long introductions for their songs. They showcased their musical chops in their introductions. Valkyrie Missile, as an example, has an intro that runs 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Distraction had a minute and 9 seconds intro. The technical aspect of the songs are very well arranged. You can see that everything is carefully thought of.

The message of the whole album is what makes it very noteworthy. All the other elements, the lyrics, melody, rifts, and vocals all add up to make the message be heard loud and clear. In each song, you will feel the emotion behind Tom’s vocals. It will haunt you and hit home. The message is relayed through the lyrics, which at times, can be repetitive. The writing is good but not remarkable. Nevertheless, it still makes a good impact for the listener.

In summary, Angels & Airwaves has entered the music scene not as another band with a famous front man but as a band that creates good, memorable, and noteworthy music.
